Nothing ordinary: 4 watch models made of unusual materials
If gold is too pretentious for you, and steel is too simple, then you should not despair to buy yourself a stylish Swiss watch. Some manufacturers allow themselves to experiment with body materials, giving an already impressive accessory a totally immersive look. Today we will consider four interesting models from a variety of non-standard materials.
Let's start with the model of one of the most popular brands - Hublot Big Bang Unico Sapphire. The brand is famous for its love for unusual materials such as linen, osmium or carbon, so the watchmaking world was both surprised and not surprised when in 2016 it was presented with a watch whose case was completely made of artificial sapphire. A year later, this model also pleased with its bright color - blue or red to choose from - which did not at all reduce the attractive transparency of the case. Despite the fact that colored sapphire crystal has been available since the early XNUMXth century, it is very difficult to give it a uniform tone. To achieve the desired result, Hublot has combined alumina - a sapphire raw material - with chrome for blue and iron for red. In the process of a complex and expensive synthesis, it turned out to preserve the properties of sapphire - high scratch resistance, the highest hardness and transparency - and pleasant bright shades. The middle part of the case, the case back and the bezel are machined from a single sapphire block, which requires special tools that wear out very quickly in the process - the work put into each piece is truly impressive.
The Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 BMG-Tech 3 Days Automatic relies on BMG-Tech, which looks like titanium but is not metal at all. The material is also known as metallic glass and is a combination of copper, aluminum, titanium, nickel and zirconium. The alloy is created by introducing materials under high pressure and high temperature, and then it is cooled very quickly, which allows the atoms to bond properly. The resulting molecular structure gives BMG-Tech the highest hardness, impact and corrosion resistance, as well as immunity to magnetic fields. The Panerai brand also promises high durability of the watch, not to mention that this 47mm diver's watch is lighter than the others and therefore more comfortable.
Well-known for their constant experimentation and high complication, Richard Mille introduced the ultra-light RM 50-03 Tourbillon Split Seconds Chronograph Ultralight McLaren F1. It was billed as the lightest mechanical chronograph of all time, which is generally deserved, because the weight of this watch together with the strap is only 40 grams. This record was achieved using carbon and titanium, which were used in the movement, which ultimately reduced its weight to 7 grams. The case of the model is made of carbon fiber and a relatively little-known material called "graphene", it is also introduced into the rubber strap of the watch. Graphene is a modified version of carbon that is 6 times lighter and 200 times stronger than steel. Carbon is made up of 600 layers of fibers, each no thicker than 30 micrometers, which are joined parallel to each other and create a characteristic "marble" appearance. The combination of these two materials makes the case both very strong and lightweight.
Zenith has also experimented with the deceptively simple Chronomaster El Primero Range Rover Velar Special Edition with Range Rover. Black watch cases give them the sporty and modern look that makes them so popular. In most cases, these watches are made of steel, which is then PVD-coated, or they are made of black ceramic. Zenith has gone further - the 42mm case of this watch is made of aluminum, the surface of which has been transformed into a highly scratch- and corrosion-resistant ceramic oxide using "plasma electrolytic oxidation". In this case, the body takes on a beige color, which is then turned into black by sandblasting. The brand calls the final material ceramized aluminum.
